Bushman Hat (Open Crown) - Reviews

The Bushman is a classic Australian stockman's hat, worn in the outback since before 1900. It is related to the old snap brim Fedora, and was the first hat imported by Akubra from England. It was also the first hat made by Akubra when they started manufacturing in the early 1900s. It was one of… more

Perfect blend of fedora/ western/ city hat,Think straoliner from the 60's.My second Akubra , Love the open crown, easy to put my own crease in.It ain't hard. Reeded sweat!! Little steam from a teapot works wonders. This hat loves the rain, every time it gets wet it is a little softer. I get more compliments on this hat than any other than my custom mades. Moonstone goes with anything DM was great to work with and found just the right size

Comments:

I bought my Bushman in December 2012. I'm lucky enough to live in the Seattle are, so I was able to go to David Morgan's store front. Very helpful staff, they even set an initial bash for me. I picked the Bushman for a rain hat. I walk upwards of 40 miles a week as transportation, and being in this climate I needed a hat. I hate hoods on coats and umbrellas aren't practical if there's any wind, and there often is around here. The Bushman's brim is perfect, especially combined with a high-collar rain coat. I've walked 5 miles in Seattle rain and although the Bushman looks soaked it never soaks through. It's also warm enough in winter coupled with a scarf. I've been working the bash for a year now. Every time it's wet I try to tweak it a bit more. It holds a shape great once it dries. The hat doesn't need babying but it always looks good whatever I do to it.

I work in a dusty construction work environment and have a flock of 50 laying hens at home as well as bee hives. I wear this hat all day, everyday. I've had my eye on it for some time and being my birthday, I pulled the trigger. I like hats and clothes in the simplest form and this fits the bill- no insignias or flash, just quality. Thank you . I'll be getting another in the future.

Thank you for your wonderful products and service. This is the second hat I've purchased from you in two years. I am delighted with both hats, how you packaged them, how you helped me over the phone, and how you "bashed" the open crown hat for me. In addition, I enjoy reading your catalogs.

Comments:

I purchased this hat from David Morgan almost 30 years ago (I think it was in '85). Since then I've worn it backpacking, camping as well as around town in sun, snow and rain. I love the flexibility of the open crown and the protection of the broad brim. It's starting to show some wear and I think I'm due for another but it's still one of my favorites. Now I just have to decide on a color!

First of all, I would like to apologize for my bad english but I'm French. I've bought a Bushman hat to ride my horse and protect me from the sun and the rain. I've also bought an open telescope bash because it looks like the old vaquero style. I'm very proud of my hat.It fits me well and stays on my head even at a full galop. I've tested it under the rain and the sun and it works fine. This is my 6th Akubra hats, all bought at David Morgan's Co, and I can say that their services are first class. The Hat travelled the Ocean and came to me with the right shape and within no time.

I have several of these Bushmans and have transformed one into a Fedora with a larger ribbon and one into a safari style hat with a pugaree. Each of looks like a completely new hat, it is that versatile. The fit is always great with all my hats from David Morgan as is the durability. I do not baby my hats and they all still look new.

Comments:

This hat is perfect for a good "using" hat on the horse ranch. Great sun prevention, rain cover, head warmer! I have the chinstrap for horseback riding which went on easy. The crown shaped easily to nice teardrop but can change given a whim to tweak it. Brim width is perfect. Sweatband is comfortable. Crown height is spot on. I have & had many Akubras but this classic still holds up. Brush it off & it goes out on the town, to the horse show or to a business meeting.

Comments:

Although I have two other Akubras and a Stetson, this is my everyday hat. It's an outdoorsy intermediate between a fedora and a "cowboy" (or Western) hat. It gives a positive, masculine appearance without "trying too hard." The Bushman is a country hat that doesn't look out of place in the city. It provides a terrific retro look for those who can carry it. In style and color, it's similar to the hat Andy Garcia wears as the Mexican general in "For Greater Glory," although the Bushman has a bound edge and a narrower ribbon. With a little steam, it's easy to bash a center dent into the open crown and pinch the front. It would be perfect, and I'd give it five stars, if the open crown were 6 inches high instead of 5 1/2, but that's a quibble. (I'm a hard marker.) This hat's a classic.

Comments:

I'm a new horse owner with no illusions that I will ever have even a passing resemblance to a cowboy or rancher. But we did buy them to ride and, as they're both green broke, anything on my head would not only have to take the brutal Tucson sun but also frequent careening into mesquite branches. They say an Akubra is made to wear hard, and that's certainly been my experience so far. The felt is developing a softer, almost fluffier appearance and feel with no compromise of the structural integrity. Very pleased that I went with the open crown - while it may not look as slick as a blocked hat, I adore that it already has a unique personality that will clearly deepen over time. Tough, classy, and an incredible value. The only critical thought I can associate with this hat is this: How can craftsmanship of this quality get halfway around the world at half the price of a remotely comparable American hat?

Comments:

I have an old Squatter (3 inch brim) and a new Bushman (3.25 inch brim). The Squatter has been immersed in water multiple times; I wash it in Woolite--it hasn't shrunk, and it shows no wear. I have owned at least 20 expensive American made "western' hats; regardless of price, they are heavier, shrink after getting wet enough times, lose their shape, shown wear, and fade. The Akubra "open crown" hats are very easy to block by hand using a little steam from a tea kettle. They hold their shape, don't fade, don't shrink, and are light as a feather. I can afford to pay whatever, but since discovering Akubra, I buy nothing else. If the hat has a vent-hole, I cover it with a pugaree band; may colors are available online and they are cheap.
