Cattleman Hat - Reviews

The Cattleman is the hat made by Akubra for the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, chosen because it typifies the hats used by the cattlemen in Australia. The safeguard it provides from sun for nose, ears and back of the neck makes this enduring Australian style a good choice for anyone spending… more

This isn't just a 'pretty boy' hat. I use it for hot weather hay/straw raking and wet, cold weather work on the farm - putting cattle through the chute, fence work, etc. Besides, the gals at the tractor store like it.

Comments:

Since my first Akubra drover in 1991, I settle for nothing else, it has the smart appearance look that I enjoy, I personally think the 5"inch. crown on my old hat gives it that edge of distinction I perfer, I'm sure I'll finally except my new one with only the 4"inch, since that was all that was offered in the cattleman/drover type currently. P.S. I've worn it twice out and about, but no quick clances from people as I get with my old hat, ha, maybe they are looking at the hole in it, I've recieved many compliments on it down throgh the years.

Comments:

This hat is used for protection from the weather elements. I work my property daily, lawn and tractor etc. Also protects my head from falling limbs and branches I'm surrounded by wilderness. This hat has saved my noggin many times from injury. I wish the brim didn't drop so low in the front and back, a wire insert would be great. If you made the cattlemen with a wire adjustment please notify me, I will buy another. I wear this hat on a daily basis. Good quality product.

Comments:

It really says something about the quality of this hat that someone would steal mine after it had been worn in sun and rain for 7 years. It still literally looked good as new. I wore it regularly as a rain hat in the Northern CA winters and often as a sun hat in the summer when I didn't want to wear a Panama. It was surprisingly cool in the heat despite being fur felt--the vent holes apparently help. I once owned a similar looking and similarly priced Stetson that was a ragged mess after five years. Stetsons are junk compared to Akubras. Akubras are that good. Made it through the summer without my Cattleman, mostly wearing an Akubra hemp Panama-style that I got at David Morgan (great straw hat!) but rainy season is just around the corner. Thinking of trying a Coober Pedy this time around, but whatever I get will definitely be an Akubra.

Comments:

I have found the cattleman to be so comfortable that I forget it's on. It's important to stretch it and form it to your head. When I first received it didn't fit right. The helpful associates at David Morgan suggested I stretch it to fit my oval head. A little tugging and stretching and it was like night and day! I look for excuses to wear it now. A wonderful hat to keep the sun off your face and the sweat out of your eyes.

I wear this hat to church and to work. It is very comfortable and protects my bald head in all weather (sun, rain, and wind) conditions. I receive many compliments from men and women as to the hat's style and color (gray) as well as how the hat complements my appearance. It is unfortunate that I cannot obtain the "Cattleman" in the color black.

Excellent and beautiful hat. Lightweight, yet durable. I find myself wearing this during hikes underneath the California sun, as well as typical landscaping work which keeps the sun out of my face. I normally wear a size 7 1/8 which is a snug fit, but the hat was a little loose. The included felt spacers remedied the situation and it's a very snug comfortable fit, that even a light gust of wind couldn't blow away. I even modified the side brim of the hat and gave them a subtle upwards curve, which was easy to do and now looks more awesome. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and will most likely order another Akubra hat. Order arrived very quick and in perfect condition.

Comments:

I have three fur felt hats from down under. One is my Over-Lander, which I use for more dressy occasions, but the other two are Cattleman's hats. I use these two almost everyday to some extent or another because I like how versatile they are. In summer they keep the sun off you and the vent holes allow the heat off your head to exit instead of making it feel like a pressure cooker. During the tough New England winters, they do the opposite by keeping your head warm and deflect rain, snow, and wind from hitting you straight on. I add a little extra tissue under the sweat band to keep the hat tight on my head without having to resort to a stampede string. Works pretty good this way. They are different colors, one is in Fawn, the other in Sand, but I wear them equally, primarily to just change up how they look. Each one is true to size in my opinion but if you have a more rounded head, you may need to steam it up a little because the turn down in the front and back may be more that you would like. If your an oval they seemed good to go from my experience. Get ready for people to comment on the hat. New Englanders for example do not see anything close to these hats on a regular basis, yet the comments I get are always positive. The hats are not exactly cowboy hats, and they are not exactly a fedora either, so they sort of fall into their own place from what I have noticed. I hope this helps anyone who is on the fence on what style to buy. Give the Cattleman a go for anything you might like to do, so far my two have more than met the challenges I have given them.
